Show explanation about the chart
Gross energy consumption refers to the total energy usage of a country, including domestic energy production, import surplus, and changes in energy reserves. The chart illustrates the shift in Switzerland's gross energy consumption (and hence energy supply) since 1930, moving from coal to oil, the increase in nuclear energy from the 1970s and 1980s, which then remained constant until the shutdown of Mühleberg, and the targets for expanding new renewable energies. PtX (Power-to-X) encompasses all processes that convert electricity into chemical energy carriers. PtX can, for instance, produce hydrogen for vehicles or storage, as well as kerosene for airplanes.

Final energy consumption includes the energy consumption of households, industry, the service sector, agriculture, and transportation. Unlike gross consumption, conversion and distribution losses, as well as the self-consumption of the conversion sector, are not included in final energy consumption. Therefore, final energy consumption provides a more insightful picture of Switzerland’s energy demand than gross consumption.
